Competition & Consumer Law

Competition law is designed to ensure that consumers benefit from a competitive market place.  The Commerce Act 1986 promotes competitive markets by regulating business acquisitions and restrictive trade practices.  In recent times, the Commerce Commission has taken a robust view of its mandate and the penalties for breaching the Act are severe.
In addition to general advice on mergers and acquisitions and restrictive trade practices, we can lodge applications to the Commerce Commission for clearance in respect of business acquisitions.

We can assist with:

  • preparing and implementing compliance programmes
  • advising you on appropriate market conduct
  • responding to requests for information and making submissions to the Commerce Commission
  • considering whether business acquisitions require notification to the Commerce Commission and defending any actions brought against you or your business.
