Paul specialises in civil litigation and conducts commercial, property and insurance litigation. He assists clients to prepare or defend themselves against claims; provides strategic advice on the conduct of complex commercial litigation; and represents clients in all civil courts.
Paul has litigated major cases on commercial contract enforcement; professional indemnity insurance defences of solicitors; liability insurance defences in the construction industry; insurance recovery actions for construction and fire losses; and property disputes, including contested leasing and sale arrangements. Paul has successfully argued in the Court of Appeal to strike out a claim against solicitors based on a new American tort of "spoliation"; and has handled from inception through to the Supreme Court a dispute over cancellation of a contract to buy property worth over NZ$13 million.
Paul joined the firm in 1993 and is a member of the Wellington District Law Society's Courts and Alternative Dispute Resolution Committees and panel of cost revision mediators. Paul has also co-authored a book on English civil procedure published by Oxford University Press, and published an article on the fiduciary duties of doctors. He is a part-time lecturer in Insurance Law at Victoria University
